What are nutritional supplements?
Your health and your mental well-being come first. Always. And because your health and well-being are so essential, scientists have developed countless nutritional supplements. What’s in them? Vitamins, minerals and plant extracts. These supplements exist in many different forms. But there is one thing they all have in common: they improve your quality of life.

Why do we need nutritional supplements?
Did you know that there is more to nutritional supplements than just vitamins and minerals? They also contain plant extracts that directly interact with your body in a beneficial way. For example, cranberries are rich is substances that can prevent urinary tract infection while thyme strengths the body’s immune system.
So what exactly can you find in all these different supplements? That is work for the scientists! Nutritional supplements are based on carefully composed and complex formulas, with a highly effective mix of ingredients. What’s more, dosages within this mix are calculated with equal care, so that you get the optimal amounts of the active components you need.
This is what you will find in a nutritional supplement:
- Vitamins (vitamin A, B-complex, C, etc.)
- Minerals (iron, zinc, etc.)
- Plants (green tea, olives, curcuma, etc.)
- Other substances that have a beneficial effect on the body (propolis, co-enzyme Q10, etc.)
Although nutritional supplements are not the same as medicines, they are often offered in the same forms, such as tablets, capsules, powders or drops.
Why take nutritional supplements?
Do the following things sound familiar in your life?
- tiredness
- sleeplessness
- stress
- painful joints
- poor bowel movements
- overweight
- PMS
- high cholesterol
- high blood pressure
Nutritional supplements can help to provide relief for all these problems in a natural manner. For example, curcuma helps to ease joint complaints, while black garlic can help to combat high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In addition, natural nutritional supplements have far fewer side effects than most forms of medication.
Are nutritional supplements healthy? Yes, but…
Nutritional supplements should never be used as an alibi for not eating healthily. It is extremely important to have a well-balanced diet as the very best way to get all the nutrients you need. Taking sufficient exercise is another crucial precondition for having a healthy mind in a healthy body.
How can you tell which supplement offer the best quality and effectiveness?
- The component vitamins, minerals and plants must be available in an easily absorbable form. For example, iron bisglycinate is more readily absorbed by the body than iron sulphate. So don’t just look at the dose level of a nutrient or extract. Also check out the form in which that nutrient or extract is provided. Remember that if your body cannot absorb the nutrients, they won’t have any effect. That goes without saying!
- The component plant extracts must be ‘standardised’ on active molecules.
Standardisation guarantees the presence of the active molecule. This is necessary for the effectiveness of the product. For example, the active substance in the Mary thistle is silymarin. 100 mg of Mary thistle extract is standardised on 80% of silymarin. In other words, it is guaranteed to contain 80 mg of silymarin. When an extract is not standardised, this guarantee no longer applies. Moreover, the percentage of active component is often much lower in such cases. - They must be 100% natural and preferably organic.

When can I use a nutritional supplement? And when not?
Before you take a nutritional supplement, always first check the user instructions. Above all, pay careful attention to the information about the daily dose and the frequency of use. However, the information about when you cannot use the supplement or when you need to adjust the dose is equally important.
Most nutritional supplements are taken during mealtimes. This is the best way to avoid any discomfort or inconvenience. In addition, many supplements are better absorbed by the body if you take them at the same time as you are eating food. Once again, first read the user information, because some supplements are best taken at other moments.
If you are pregnant or giving breastfeeding, be especially careful with the use of nutritional supplements that are based on plant extracts. Not enough is yet known about the effects of these extracts during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Similarly, when you are taking medication, it is better to avoid some nutritional supplements. The combination of the two can sometimes cause an undesirable reaction. You will always find this information on the packaging.
If in doubt, always consult with your house doctor.
